Abstract

Introduction: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a rare chronic neuropathic pain condition in paediatrics. The clinical features differ from those in adults. Early diagnosis is crucial to ensure effective management and to prevent chronicity.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics, disease course, and therapeutic response in paediatric cases of CRPS treated in a Chronic Pain Unit.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted including three patients under 18 years of age diagnosed with CRPS type I and treated in our unit over the past year. Clinical data, treatment strategies, and functional outcomes were analysed.

Results: All three cases involved adolescent girls, with predominant involvement of the lower limbs and associated autonomic symptoms. Treatment consisted of intensive physiotherapy combined with individualised pharmacotherapy and psychological support. All patients showed significant improvement in functional status and pain reduction, achieving reintegration into school and recreational activities.

Conclusions: Paediatric CRPS has a favourable prognosis when diagnosed and treated early using a multidisciplinary approach, with active physiotherapy playing a key role. The publication of case series contributes to improved recognition and management of this condition in the paediatric population.
